Chapter 8
Jilly bounced from foot to foot as he waited for Douglas to finish getting dressed. He was excited about the coming evening but apprehensive at the same time. They were having a dinner party for the clan. Douglas had decided that it was time for them to get to know their people and for the clan to get to know them.
A part of Jilly was delighted at the prospect of meeting everyone, not because he was meeting new people but because Douglas was falling into his role as alpha like he was born to the position. In the days since Douglas had taken over, he had gone about insuring that the clan would be in good hands.
The garish furniture and decorations had been sold off, replaced by comfortable but less expensive items. The money that had been earned from the sale of Alpha Jonesâs lavish stuff had garnered the clan a tidy profit that would help them in the future.
And the place looked a whole lot better, too.
Jilly had hated the place from the moment they drove up the driveway and he had seen it for the first time. Little by little, it was starting to grow on him. Having the barbed wire removed from the stone fence that surrounded the place had helped a lot. While it was still a strong fortress, it no longer felt like a prison.
And Jilly was all for that.
He wanted no reminders of the darker period in Douglasâs life. His mate had suffered enough. He had paid for his crimes, and he didnât need to live in another place that looked just like the prison he had spent so much time in.
Jilly wasnât so thrilled that he had to stand by Douglasâs side tonight as the alpha mate. He loved the fact that he was Douglasâs mate. He just didnât think he made very good alpha mate material. In fact, he was damn positive of it, and everyone else would be, too, the second they met him.
While he might not be in the business anymore, Jilly had still been a hooker. There was absolutely no way around that. He had been paid to have sex. People would know. There was only a very slight chance that he wouldnât meet someone that had been a client. Ajax was proof of that. They might not have had sex, but Ajax had still paid him for his time.
Jilly would do just about anything not to embarrass his mate. He just couldnât think of a way out of tonightâs little shindig. Douglas insisted that he be there. Hell, Miles, Riley, and Ajax had insisted as well. They said his place was by Douglasâs side.
Jilly agreed to a point. His place was by Douglasâs side, as long as it didnât interfere with the life that Douglas was building for himself. Douglas might not think he was meant to be an alpha, but Jilly knew he was. He had an air of authority and the appearance of one who demanded instant obedience.
